With “What is Truth?”, Pilate gives voice to a central question of Scripture … and human existence.<\/p>\n\n\n
Jesus answers, “I am the Truth.”<\/p>\n\n\n
When I looked up alethea<\/i> in Strong’s Concordance, it says, “In ancient Greek culture, al\u1e17theia <\/i>was synonymous for “reality” as the opposite of illusion, i.e. fact.”<\/p>\n\n\n
Thinking of Jesus saying “I am Reality” hits a little differently, doesn’t it?<\/p>\n\n\n
Is that because we tend to think of Christian faith as merely a set of propositional statements that we give mental assent to? In other words, we use “true” in this way:<\/p>\n\n\n
God is Triune in nature? True.<\/p>\n\n\n
Jesus was sinless? True.<\/p>\n\n\n
Jesus was crucified, died, and was buried? On the third day He rose from the dead? True, True, True, and True.<\/p>\n\n\n
So these things end up being a simple binaries in our minds. If something is not true, it is false. If something is true, it is not false. And that’s easy to give mental assent to.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n
But to step back and say Jesus is REALITY?\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n
This seems broader and deeper somehow.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n
