{"id":9412,"date":"2025-11-12T03:25:00","date_gmt":"2025-11-12T03:25:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/stevegrossblog.com\/?p=9412"},"modified":"2026-10-02T01:31:18","modified_gmt":"2026-10-02T01:31:18","slug":"basic-teaching","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stevegrossblog.com\/?p=9412","title":{"rendered":"BASIC TEACHING"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If at all possible, I plan to avoid using words like &#8220;pedagogy&#8221; in my dissertation and keep to a straightforward exploration of &#8220;teaching&#8221;.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because teaching doesn&#8217;t HAVE to be complicated and learning how to teach doesn&#8217;t HAVE to involve a bunch of $5 words or drawn-out explanations of esoteric philosophies.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">(Is &#8220;esoteric&#8221; worth at least $5?)<\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Teaching is a skill, a science, and an art &#8211; but the basics of competent and effective teaching are not beyond the reach of any ordinary person.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Off the top of my head, here are some basics of teaching:<\/p>\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n\n<li>Start with\u00a0what the students already know &#8211; or think they know.<\/li>\n\n\n<li>Set objectives: what do the students need to know?<\/li>\n\n\n<li>Plan the &#8220;test&#8221; in advance: How will the students show they have learned the material?<\/li>\n\n\n<li>Determine a logical order of presentation.<\/li>\n\n\n<li>Provide some sort of road map up front.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n<li>Make the material relevant.
