{"id":9958,"date":"2024-06-04T02:46:00","date_gmt":"2024-06-04T02:46:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/stevegrossblog.com\/?p=9958"},"modified":"2026-10-02T01:32:24","modified_gmt":"2026-10-02T01:32:24","slug":"word-of-the-day","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stevegrossblog.com\/?p=9958","title":{"rendered":"WORD OF THE DAY"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A few weeks ago I signed up for a &#8220;Word of the Day&#8221; email newsletter.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It&#8217;s occasionally enlightening but mostly useless.<\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Most of the featured words are so obscure that if you used them, you would sound either idiotic (like you had just made up a word or used the wrong one) or pretentious (like you&#8217;re trying to sound smart by pretending this word is part of your working vocabulary).<\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here&#8217;s a great example from the other day:<\/p>\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/stevegrossblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/crepitate.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"244\" height=\"132\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Crepitate&#8221; means &#8220;to make a crackling sound&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These emails always give a few examples of how to use the word properly. For &#8220;crepitate&#8221;, these were the sample sentences:<\/p>\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n\n<li>&#8220;The fallen leaves crepitate under Samuel&#8217;s feet as he runs through the woods.&#8221;<\/li>\n\n\n<li>&#8220;I could practically hear electricity crepitating beneath my fingers when I touched the plasma ball at the science museum.&#8221;<\/li>\n\n\n<li>&#8220;Lisa relished how the fire crepitated as more logs were thrown on.&#8221;<\/li>\n\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some words are better left out of sight in the retirement home.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With a do-not-resuscitate order.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A few weeks ago I signed up for a &#8220;Word of the Day&#8221; email newsletter.\u00a0 It&#8217;s occasionally enlightening but mostly useless.
